what is it like to be a user researcher at facebook?
I Got Offers from Google and Facebook
And turning one of them downwards was even harder than passing all the interviews!
Commencement, I'll give you a fleck of background virtually me:
- I got my first UX Job in 2014. Prior to this, I have been primarily working as a blueprint freelancer (all types of projects from graphic pattern to spider web to UX) at pocket-sized startups and companies.
- I have a Available's degree from SJSU in Graphic Design.
- I am pursuing my Master'due south caste from Northwestern University in Information Designs and Strategy right now.
- In improver to my full-time task, I love working on side projects such every bit running a blog on Instagram, writing Medium manufactures, working with startups every bit a UX adviser, investing in startups, and mentoring design students.
Now I would love to respond the most pop questions!
- How did yous apply? Did anyone refer you?
This fourth dimension, both companies reached out to me on LinkedIn. I was non looking for new opportunities and would turn down all other inquiries. Just in this case, I decided to give it a try and go with the flow.
I of the advantages when recruits reach out vs you applying on the company website is that in many cases you lot won't need to update your resume and portfolio. It'south probably just my unique experience, but I did not update mine but linked my Medium articles to my website. However, I did spend a lot of fourth dimension nailing down my presentation.
Interesting fact! I found all of my jobs through a cold application on company websites. While finding a referral is still an easier way to make sure your application is not going to be lost in a clock pigsty, it is definitely worth applying on the visitor website.
- How to keep your portfolio upwards to date?
I write case studies after each big projection because, first, information technology helps to reflect on what you've washed and share your experience with the design community. Just it as well provides design instance studies for your portfolio. I take worked for 4 different companies, pregnant I updated my portfolio at least iv times previously. Information technology's super time-consuming and I never always want to do it again. Instead, I write a case written report after each projection now.
- For how long have you been preparing for interviews?
Since 2014, lol. I've always wanted to piece of work for i of these summit companies to become feel designing for billions of users. I don't think that there is a demand to say that this is non the commencement time I have been interviewing with them.
I believe in a growth mindset and that means pretty much anything can be learned. It just takes time and a lot of difficult work!
- What is the process?
The process is pretty similar in both companies. Start, y'all get a phone call from a recruiter to discuss your background and what you are looking for in your adjacent opportunity. After Google, I had a one-60 minutes call with a designer to talk about my background and present one curt project. Facebook has 2 30 min interviews: portfolio presentation and app critique.
The last interview is definitely the hardest and longest one. Facebook has a 30-minute presentation followed by four ane:1 sessions, which include whiteboard design challenge, app critique, behavioral and more than. Google has a one-hour presentation followed by 45–1hour one:1 sessions including whiteboard challenges, behavioral, and more.
My overall impression is that Facebook has an amazing transparent procedure that takes 3–4 weeks, while Google is super messy, confusing, and slow!
I wish I knew all of these before applying. I would avoid making so many mistakes!
To choose between Facebook and Google was even harder than passing all of the interviews!
I heard several stories from my friends who are engineers about getting both offers, merely something that sounded like a lot of fun in real life turned out to be a lot of stress instead.
Here are the things that I took into account before making my decision:
one. The team and the project were the most important factors. I talked to multiple teams at each company, and I just really liked the Messenger team.
ii. This is personal, but I am non a huge fan of material design and Android. While I practise blueprint for both platforms, iOS and Android, I did non detect myself very excited well-nigh being stuck with fabric blueprint.
iii. Messenger is used by billions of people throughout the earth, and designing for such a widely used app beats many of the other factors.
4. Based on my interview process I got a feeling that Google is much slower than Facebook. Meaning that it takes longer to make even smaller decisions and launch features and projects.
5. And last but not least, Facebook gave me such a smashing offer to help me make a determination then I couldn't resist accepting it right away!
So yes, I decided to accept an offer from Facebook. Yay! I can't wait for my get-go mean solar day on the blue team!!!
What is your dream job?
